The Complete Guide to Dog Collar Charms

5 min read
Four Tobey & Oliver leather collars in navy, pink, sage green, and light blue with gold charms stacked on marble

A dog collar charm is the fastest way to turn a plain collar into something that looks made for your dog. But most charms on the market are stamped tags with a jump ring, they tarnish, they jingle, and they don't sit right against the leather. Here's what to look for, and how we build ours.

What a good dog collar charm is made of

Stainless steel is the baseline. It takes an 18K gold PVD finish that doesn't chip against a leash clip. Skip zinc-alloy 'gold-tone', it turns green. Every Tobey & Oliver charm, the Bone, Luna, Shelly, and Love, is cast in solid metal and finished by hand.

How to swap and style

Look for a charm hook, not a jump ring. A hook lets you swap the charm in seconds without pliers, swap the Bone for daily walks and the Luna for evenings. You can also see the whole swap system in our Studio customizer.

Care

Wipe with a soft cloth after wet walks. If the finish ever looks dull, a jeweler's polishing cloth brings it back. Full details in our gold-tone hardware care guide.

Which charm for which dog?

  • Bone, the everyday classic; pairs with any color collar.
  • Luna, softer, celestial; looks best in tan or cream.
  • Shelly, for coastal dogs and anything summer.
  • Love, a gift; also our best-selling first charm.
