Collar vs Harness: Which Is Right for Your Dog?

There's no universal answer to collar vs harness, the right pick depends on breed, pulling behavior, and what the walk actually looks like. Here's how we think about it, and how we design for both.

When a collar is the better choice

For dogs that walk on a loose leash and don't lunge, a well-fitted flat collar is more comfortable, easier to put on, and lets you attach ID and a charm without a second piece of gear. Our collar collection is built around this use case: soft edges, secure buckles, no pressure on the trachea when the leash is slack.

When a harness is the better choice

Pullers, long-backed breeds (dachshunds, corgis), brachycephalic breeds (French bulldogs, pugs), and puppies still learning leash manners are all safer in a harness. Chest pressure is distributed across a much larger area than neck pressure. Browse our harnesses or start with the Toli harness.

The middle path most people miss

Most of our customers use both, a collar for daily wear and quick outings, a harness for walks and hikes. Building matching sets is exactly what Studio is for.

Fit notes for small breeds

If you have a dachshund, whippet, or small mix, read our small-breed sizing guide first, it changes what size to order.
